How well do I have to surf to take part in a Hydro Surf Safari?
You can take part in a Surf Safari regardless of your skill level. We have countless spots of varying conditions to choose from, and are dedicated to finding the best wave for your surfing abilities.
What happens if the surf’s flat or onshore?
Luckily Dunedin’s coastline is open to a 180 degree swell window, meaning there’s always somewhere that’s offshore. There are certain spots that pick up more swell when everywhere else is flat and other spots that are sheltered when everywhere else is maxing out, so the chances of finding a wave each day are pretty high. However there’s always going to be the odd day where nature just doesn’t co-operate. If the surf’s no good, there are plenty of other fun activities we can help organize to keep you & your crew entertained. Check out some great options HERE.
What’s an average day on Safari?
Surf trips are primarily planned around swell, wind and tide but here’s a rough guide as to how you trip may play out. The night before the Safari starts we’ll asses the forecast and work out a flexible itinerary with you for the following day. Next morning we’ll pick you up from your accommodation confirm the real-time conditions and then head off for the days first session. After arriving at the break, your guide will explain the line-up and point out its main features (peaks, rips, etc), then surfing begins! After we arrive at the chosen beach or point break to surf, we will get ready together and talk about the waves on offer so that you know as well as possible what to expect and how to navigate the line-up. Once we're ready and information on the surf break is given and understood, with all questions being answered, we will be ready to surf! While we are out surfing together, if you like, our guides can observe and give you tactical and technical tips for your surfing and the line-up to help you progress as much as possible in our time together. After lunch we’ll re-assess the conditions (changing locations if needed) and get back into surfing. Depending on the amount of daylight, surf conditions and your froth levels, we can tag on a third session in the evening too! Throughout the day there will be dialogue and planning for the next surf sessions, including the reports and options for days ahead. Once you're surfed out, we will drop you off at your accommodation for a well-deserved rest, or a quick change before you sample some of Dunedin’s best food, drink and night time entertainment.
What’s included in the Safari Package?
Do I need my own surf equipment?
If you have a favourite board, or a good wetsuit and the means to bring them, we do recommend doing so. But don't worry, we understand all to well that travelling with surf equipment is a pain in the neck and you can't always bring what you want, so we have invested in a full range of premium surfboards, accessories and warm wetsuits, available for hire during your Surf Safari. Book your rental gear HERE.
I forgot to bring (leash, fins, wax or other item of surf gear), can you help me out?
We sure can. We own and operate Hydro Surf Shop, one of the few original ‘core’ surf shops left in New Zealand. If you want to top up on any surf essentials, you’ll find it in stock at Hydro. Or, ask us about our rental equipment options.
Dings, breaks and surfboard repair.
The biggest worry when flying is always "are my boards going to arrive ok?!". Well, while we can't guarantee those baggage handlers won't go wild with your surfboard, we can advise the NZ baggage handlers have a pretty good record with boards. Should your boards arrived dinged, or become so throughout your surf safari, we have an excellent board repairer working for our surf shop, and plenty of Solarez repair kits to get you back in the water in a hurry. If you break a board, we can fix snaps. And there's plenty of new and secondhand surfboards around if you're looking for a replacement.
What kind of waves should we expect?
The Otago coastline offers almost every wave type possible. Depending on the surf conditions during your Surf Safari you could surf everything from mellow points, punchy beach breaks and solid slabs. The average surf size here is waist to head high, but smaller and bigger waves can readily be tracked down if you like them. The surf energy in our region is characteristically regarded as powerful, but again this does range from break to break and surf spots can be chosen to suit your preference.
What clothes do I need to bring with me?
Bring the same gear you would if you’re going on holiday or surf trip anywhere. Just make sure you pack a few extra layers in case it gets chilly.
Where can we stay during the Safari?
For the best Surf Safari experience we recommend staying right on the beach with us! The Hydro Esplanade Apartments are modern, fully equipped with everything you’ll need during your stay including free high speed internet, Chromecast, roof top terrace and an award winning restaurants down stairs. Learn more about our apartments HERE.
